During those days’ parents had control over their families, the husband was the breadwinner, he got all the Tax benefits for himself the wife and the children, the children were under the strict control of their parents and extended family. A young lady of the age of eighteen to twenty had to be indoors by 11 pm except for special occasions.
Corporal punishment was prevalent both in the home and in the school, so the children had to go to school, their behavior to their teachers has to be absolute, their homework had to be done, truant was almost un=heard of, and the company they kept was monitored.
There was also an opportunity for learning a trade in a factory or on the job, and people who wish to earn extra money could have their weekly job, and a part-time, or weekend job no questions asked so bread was always on the table.
Musical entertainment was provided by juke Boxes in sport and social clubs, and the regular weekend Sound systems competing with each other at private parties to attract the crowd of party goers. There was as much fun in this social and cultural entertainment free from crime and violence, and people were looking forward to these weekends get to gather, and each disk Jackey had their own following base on the quality of their sound system, and the latest reggae, sca, and soul music coming out of Jamaica and America. People like Count Lezz, and Shacka was known for the best sound system in town, and Steve Bernard was the disk Jackey of the day.
In London the clubs that black people were welcome was Count Suckle, Roaring Twenties, Central London, the Ramjam Brixton, Parma, in North London, and Roney Scot for the Jazz fans in the West End.
The producers of Jamaican music were Pama Record, Lee Perry, Brian Lee, Trojan Record, and Chris Blackwell. From America, Motown and Stacks’s record were the main producers of Soul and Blues, and black people in the U. K. would ensure that they had the latest record that was coming out of these institutions during the sixties, seventies, eighties and even the nineties.
Looking back, I would say those were the good old days, because irrespective of the unwelcome treatment from raises white cult that we had to put up with, we didn’t see any black and black guns and knife crimes, killing and murdering each other, gang competing for territory, drug-related murder, and the likes.
